really, it seems mostly symbolic, similar to baptism or something else symbolic.

a good friend of mine has been dating this guy for about…oh, 8 months. he is not the kind of guy to say i love you lightly, so when he did we all knew he meant it. there was a point when i asked him if he would marry her if they were still together when they got older.
he said no.
i said why not?
he said, “i don’t need no certificate to tell her i love her.”
makes sense.
